Supporting physical and mental wellness through social facilities at Sandton Taxi Rank
The public perception of the minibus taxi industry has of recent undergone a gradual transformation where the once feared presence of Taxipreneurs and minibus taxi ranks are now being seen as accommodating and approachable.
In continuing to support this transformation, SA Taxi Foundation is proud to support the Eastern Taxi Liaison Committee (ETLC) with the launch of the Sandton Taxi Rank Pause Lounge. One of the few of its kind in South Africa, the Pause Lounge is a dedicated facility which Taxipreneurs and traders can access to enjoy physical and mental rest, as well as socialise amongst each other. This is a massive support enabler for the industry which is becoming more deliberate about the wellness of its participants.
Speaking at the launch of the Pause Lounge, ETLC Public Relations Officer Mr John Mnisi introduced in attendance to the work that the association does which he described as negotiation with industry service providers, integration representation with other associations and providing social support for all its members. After an introduction of the association leadership team conducted by Secretary Mrs Reinett Makgotla, the Head of Corporate Affairs at SA Taxi, Mr Matsidikanye Moswane gave a timely reminder on the role that Taxipreneurs have played over the years but more so in the last 24 months in the midst of the COVID19 pandemic and instances of regional calamity. The opening of the Pause Lounge is one of the symbols of gratitude that SA Taxi extends to the minibus taxi community who Moswane hoped would be encouraged by.
The keynote address was given by the Chairperson of ETLC, Mr Jabulane Ntshangase. While the associations support day to day operations of Taxipreneurs, Mr Ntshangase expressed that its long-term vision was to dignify industry and make rank positive experience for all. This he remarked, would make minibus taxi’s holistically viable competition to all forms of public transport available in its operation region. “We also wish to introduce developments such as in vehicle Wi-Fi, so that commuters can enjoy their trips each time they use a minibus taxi,” he added. For the ETLC and the Sandton Taxi Rank, the launch of the Pause Lounge means that Taxipreneurs and traders can enjoy a new benefit that will make their time spent at work a pleasant one. Happy drivers will make for happy commutes on the roads of Sandton and its surrounds.
After the formalities were concluded, the Sandton Taxi Rank was officially opened by the Chairperson. All in attendance enjoyed games of foosball, arcade, ping pong and snooker; with many positive remarks shared all around.
SA Taxi Foundation sponsored R86 000 towards this modification of the facility. Director of SA Taxi Foundation and Group Communications Officer Maroba Maduma says,
“SA Taxi is always eager to support initiatives that give back to the industry and community.
