Moral Regeneration Month:

 

 

Initiatives that taxi associations participate in, to rebuild their communities.

 

 

Moral Regeneration Month, an initiative of the Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM), is commemorated in July and aims at encouraging people to commit to efforts of building their communities. With a grounding in positive values and a dedication to building a caring society, the month-long efforts aim at creating lasting peace and prosperity in the country.

 

Back in 1998, at the National Religious Leaders Forum, former president Nelson Mandela recognised that apartheid had eroded the moral fabric of South African society and that moral regeneration and renewal were in great need. The MRM was started, under the patronage of the Deputy President, and today battles to address the country’s moral decay.

 

An impressive effort at giving back to the community has been spearheaded by Mrs. Reinett Makgotla, HOD of Social and Development at the RULLDTA Taxi Association in Randburg. The initiatives are multi-faceted, aiding the community in many ways:

 

Funerals: Minibus taxis are offered to transport mourners on the day of the funeral, and the association provides a cash donation to assist with costs.
Fires: Shacks that burn down are rebuilt with help from the association.
Events: Youth Day, Mandela Day, Woman’s Day, and Heritage Day are just some of the events hosted by the association for the community, where lunch is prepared to go along with various fun activities.

 

The RULLDTA Taxi Association relies on its partnerships to make these initiatives possible – like Halfway Toyota in Honeydew and MTM Hope Giver Foundation. The Foundation strives to assist widows and children who have lost family members due to taxi violence.

 

Moral Regeneration Month calls on all South Africans to promote good behaviour in all spheres of life, encompassing these values:

• Promoting responsible freedom
• Improving economic justice
• Enhancing family and community values
• Upholding honesty, integrity, and loyalty
